We like to think we do things a bit differently in Liverpool, but when it comes to naming our children do we actually follow the trend?

The most popular baby names in England and Wales have been revealed and LiverpoolWorld has gone through each borough in the Liverpool City Region to see if we follow the crowd or tread our own path.

Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that the top choice nationally in 2020 was Oliver, for boys, and Olivia, for girls.

Oliver has held onto the top spot for boys for the past eight years, while Olivia has been at the girls’ number one spot nationally for five years in a row.

George and Arthur completed the 2020 top three for boys, while Amelia and Isla ranked two and three for girls.

In the Liverpool City Region just one of the six boroughs matched with both the top two choices of Oliver and Olivia.

Halton

In Halton, 13 newborns were called Isla, making it top of the list for girls.

And for boys, Archie was the favourite, with 17 babies in the area given the name last year.

Naming trends have stayed relatively unchanged for girls in Halton, with this year’s favourite the same as in 2019, while the top boys’ name then was Oliver.

Knowsley

In Knowsley, 14 newborns were called Isla, making it top of the list for girls.

And for boys, Joseph and Oliver were joint favourites, each given to 18 babies in the area last year.

Naming trends have stayed relatively unchanged for girls in Knowsley, with this year’s favourite the same as in 2019, while the joint top boys’ names then were George and Thomas.

Liverpool

In Liverpool, 32 newborns were called Amelia, making it top of the list for girls.

And for boys, Leo was the favourite, with 51 babies in the area given the name last year.

Naming trends in Liverpool have stayed relatively unchanged from 2019, with this year’s favourite names the same as the previous year..

St Helens

In St. Helens, 16 newborns were called Amelia, Rosie or Sophia, making the names joint top of the list for girls.

And for boys, George and Thomas were joint favourites, each given to 20 babies in the area last year.

Naming trends have changed in St. Helens compared to 2019, when the top girls’ name was Olivia and the favourite for boys was Oliver.

Sefton

In Sefton, 20 newborns were called Olivia, making it top of the list for girls.

And for boys, Oliver was the favourite, with 30 babies in the area given the name last year.

Naming trends have stayed relatively unchanged for girls in Sefton , with this year’s favourite the same as in 2019, while the top boys’ name then was Leo.

Wirral

In Wirral, 20 newborns were called Amelia, making it top of the list for girls.

And for boys, Oliver was the favourite, with 29 babies in the area given the name last year.

Naming trends have stayed relatively unchanged for boys in Wirral , with this year’s favourite the same as in 2019, while the top girls’ name then was Ava.
