Between 14,000 and 30,000 people in Liverpool may have suffered with long-COVID since the start of the pandemic, new analysis reveals.

Long-COVID, which the NHS characterises as symptoms from COVID-19 continuing more than 12 weeks after infection, has been reported in people across the globe but the scale of the problem is still largely unknown.

Liverpool City Council’s health and wellbeing board is set to meet this week to discuss the problems posed by long-COVID.

The council said the numbers reported in their modeling should treated with caution as they vary hugely depending on what definition of long-COVID is used.

Pandemic Institute

Liverpool is to be the headquarters for the Pandemic Institute, committed to helping the world prevent, prepare, and respond more effectively to pandemics.

It is a medical, academic and civic partnership between the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool City Council, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool).

The overall aim is to accelerate the global response to pandemics, unify global intelligence and increase the reach and impact of pandemic research.

Baltic Hotel

The newly opened Baltic Hotel has been praised by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram for its role in driving tourism in the area.

Mayor Rotheram said the opening, which is the first newly developed hotel in the Baltic, was the latest sign of the transformation of the area in recent decades. He said: “I used to work in the Baltic Triangle area as a bricklayer in the 90s and the regeneration here has been incredible.

“You would have never been able to put a hotel here back then but what’s happened since is remarkable and this development will drive more investment and more tourism to the area, which is a great thing for our city.

“I love when a breath of new life is given to an old building and The Baltic Hotel owners have done exactly that, the music memorabilia and record players in the rooms give it a really authentic feel and it’s another fantastic offering for people visiting Liverpool.”
