Christmas roadworks: six key road closures for Merseyside drivers this week

Merseyside motorists who are driving home for Christmas or popping out for a bit of last-minute shopping will have six road closures to watch out for this week.

And a number of them are expected to cause delays – with drivers facing waits of between 10 minutes and half an hour.

The latest expected works list, with notes from National Highways, shows that two closures already in place in the Wirral area and one in the St Helens region are expected to carry on this week:

M58, from 9pm December 13 to 6am December 21, moderate delays (10-30 minutes): M6 northbound and southbound, junction 21a to junction 26 - Lane closure for Construction improvement/Upgrade.

M53, from 9pm December 18 to 6am December 22, slight delays (under 10 minutes): M53 northbound and southbound, junction 1 - 12 lane closures due to electrical works.

M53, from 8pm November 29 2021 to 5am January 5 2022, moderate delays (10-30 minutes): M53 northbound, junction 4 - three - Lane closure and carriageway closure for Electrical works.

And a further three closures will begin over the next seven days:

M53, from 8pm December 20 2021 to 6am January 27 2022, moderate delays (10-30 minutes): M53 northbound, junction 3 entry slip road closure due to electrical works.

M53, from 8pm December 20 to 6am December 24, slight delays (under 10 minutes): M53 northbound and southbound, junction 1 - 12 lane closures due to electrical works.

A41, from 9pm December 20 to 5am December 21, moderate delays (10-30 minutes): M53 northbound, J6 to J6 - carriageway closure for Electrical works.

National Highways is responsible for maintaining motorways and major A-roads, so closures of smaller roads will not be included in their schedule.
