The North West as a whole had 318.4 cases per 100,000 as of 14 September 2021; although this figure has remained steady over the past few weeks. The data makes the region third highest in England for COVID-19 rates behind the East Midlands and the North East.

The government released guidance last week about how to stay safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

A full rollout of booster jabs started this week in a bid to give people further protection from the virus ahead of winter.

Around 4.5 million people in priority groups will be eligible for a booster over the coming weeks.

NHS England said people will be contacted as they become eligible, via a call or text from a GP-led site or via the National Booking Service, which will start issuing invitations this week.

Alongside frontline workers, those eligible for the booster vaccine include those living in residential care homes for older adults, all adults aged 50 years or over and people aged 16 to 49 years with underlying health conditions.

Health secretary Sajid Javid said: “It is brilliant to see that the first booster jabs are being rolled out – thanks to the phenomenal efforts of the NHS who continue to work tirelessly to help us fight COVID-19 and protect the most vulnerable.

“We know vaccines save lives and, with every jab, our wall of defence across the country gets higher, with more than 112,300 lives saved and over 24 million cases prevented in England alone.”
