COVID-19: Liverpool areas where infection rates are highest among at-risk over 60s

The UK has recorded the largest daily rise in COVID-19 cases since lockdown rules ended in England three months ago.

On Thursday, 21 October, there were 52,009 new infections reported - the highest leap since July - government data shows.

There were also 115 deaths the same day.

The number of new cases has been rising rapidly, with infections in the last seven days up 18% compared to the week before.

Deaths have not risen as quickly, but the seven-day total is still up 11%.

In Liverpool, all six city regions recorded an increase in COVID-19 infection rates. Knowsley had the highest rate, recording a 33.4% increase in the seven days leading up to 16 October.

The surge comes one month into the NHS COVID-19 booster jab campaign, targeting people at-risk.

Those aged over 60 have so far been given 1,963,828 top ups ahead of expected COVID-19 cases over winter.

Downing Street has now said the Government will keep a “close watch” on the situation.

In council areas across England, Copeland, in western Cumbria, has the highest recorded weekly rate of COVID-19 infections in those aged 60 and over, as of 12 October, the most recent period with council-level data.

Copeland tallied up 83 new cases in the seven days to 12 October, giving it the highest rate in England at 400.8 per 100,000 people aged 60 and over.

Leeds has seen the highest number of new cases among 60 and overs, with 467 recorded, a rate of 288.

COVID-19 rates among over 60s in Liverpool City Region

In Liverpool, St Helens Borough Council area had the highest infection rate among the over 60s, ranking 52nd in the whole of England.

The region recorded 115 new weekly cases during the most recent period with council-level data (6-12 October) with a rate of 237.5 per 100,000.

Wirral had the lowest rate at 194.7 per 100,000, but recorded 180 new weekly cases.
