COVID-19: The Liverpool neighbourhoods where infections rose fastest as England records highest daily rate

England has reported the highest number of daily COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, with 117,093 new infections.
The total breaks the previous record of 113,628 set on Christmas Day, and hospital admissions have also seen a rise.

Hide AdThere were 9,546 people in hospital with the virus in England as of 28 December – up 38% from the previous week and the highest total since the beginning of March.
Despite the record high figures, the UK government has confirmed that no new COVID-19 restrictions will be put in place in England before the new year.
In Liverpool,Mayor Joanne Anderson and Director of Public Health Matt Ashton have urged people to get vaccinated to protect themselves and the NHS.
The Liverpool Health Protection Board (LHPB), which oversees the city’s response to the pandemic, says the Omicron variant is now “a very serious threat” to the region and the health service.

Hide AdThe LHPB said: “The reality is therefore that we are highly likely to be facing a record peak of cases in a few weeks.”
COVID-19 infection rates
In England, the rate of COVID-19 cases rose from 808.7 per 100,000 people in the week to 16 December, to 1,207.4 per 100,000 in the week to 23 December. That is an increase of 49.3%.
At neighbourhood level, coronavirus case rates have been published for the week to 23 December.

Orrell Park had 1369.2 cases per 100,000 people in the latest weekly figures, a rise of 211.7% from the week before.
4. Everton East
Everton East had 1307.4 cases per 100,000 people in the latest weekly figures, a rise of 203.2% from the week before.
5. Calderstones
