The pandemic has been challenging for all of us, not least people who are homeless.

This Christmas The Whitechapel Centre is open for anyone who is rough sleeping, providing a warm, safe space, a gift and a cooked Christmas Dinner.

They’ve been busy in their donation hub distributing gifts and Christmas treats around the city.

What does The Whitechapel Centre do?

The way The Whitechapel Centre deliver some rough sleeper services have changed dramatically since the pandemic.

For example, they no longer provide large communal meals, and the night shelter has been replaced with numerous emergency accommodation options dispersed around the city.

But their outreach team remain out on the streets every day and night, responding to calls to the Always Help Available phone line, encouraging people to come indoors.

Jasmin Browne is Co-chair of the University of Liverpool’s Help the Homeless society. They help various charities all year round, but today she’s one of the volunteers at the Whitechapel donation centre.

She says: “I think people felt very helpless last year in the society because they wanted to get out and they could see people in the streets.

“I think everyone’s been keen to get hands on, volunteering and fundraising this year, its great really. We’ve got 416 people in our society now, it’s becoming really really popular - its one of the biggest societies.”

Christmas donations

They say they can only do their work because of the kind of donations they receive. For the Christmas appeal, they say they still need gift sets for men as well as underwear for men in sizes small and medium.
