This year Liverpool’s traditional Pancake Day race will return to the city after taking a break in 2021.

The race pits the city’s top chefs against each other to create the perfect pancake while running laps of the Liverpool Parish Church gardens in celebration of Shrove Tuesday, on March 1.

Five of Liverpool’s best and most eager chefs will be tasked with creating the perfect pancake- one heavy enough to withstand the outdoors but light enough to be flipped properly while running.

It must not fall from the pan.

The winner will receive an engraved pancake pan, presented by the Rector of Liverpool, the Reverend Canon Dr Crispin Pailing.

Rev Pailing said: “The Pancake Day Race is a proud tradition. The winning chef will have their engraved pan installed in their kitchen for a full year. The weather might not always be on their side, but we know our city’s chefs are committed to the cause and will be determined to batter the competition”.

Traditions

The race dates from the 1980s, though it was revived in the mid 2000s.

The origins of Pancake Day (or Shrove Tuesday) itself come from the Christian tradition of using up remaining fat and dairy products before that would be given up for the fasting period of Lent.

Most Christians no longer give up these products, but will still make a ‘Lenten sacrifice’ and give up one food or indulgence for the Lent period, which will begin this year on 2 March and last until 14 April.

Where & When?

The race will begin at 11am on Tuesday, March 1, at Liverpool Parish Church beside Chapel Street.

Who’s taking part?

Five of Liverpool’s best eateries will put forward a chef to try and win their restaurant the engraved pancake pan and title of best pancake.

The chefs competing this year are from Hotel Indigo, Tempest, Ma Boyle’s, Artists Club, and Lunya Lita.
