He has been taken into custody for questioning. A handgun was seized and will be forensically examined.

Officers were first deployed late on Wednesday night after receiving reports regarding the safety of a man outside the city centre hospital.

The area was cordoned off and Prescot Street, which runs past the main entrance to the hospital, was closed at both ends as officers remained on the scene overnight.

At around 10:20 on Thursday morning, twelve hours after police first arrived on the scene, a man in his 60s was detained at the front of the hospital.

A spokesman for the Royal Liverpool University Hospital said it remained “fully operational” and access to the hospital via the main entrance has now resumed.
