Suspected gunman from Liverpool city centre hospital standoff charged with firearms offences

The 61-year-old man arrested after a 12-hour standoff with armed police outside Royal Liverpool University Hospital in November has been charged with two firearms offences.

Donald Coleman will appear in court on Wednesday, 5 January, charged with possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.

On Wednesday, 3 November, police officers were deployed to Prescot Street in Liverpool city centre at around 22:20 after receiving reports regarding the safety of a man outside the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Police cordoned off the road at both ends and closed that main entrance to the hospital as they began negotiations.

Officers remained in place until the man was detained and a handgun recovered at around 10.20 the following morning, Thursday, 4 November.

The man, now named as Mr Coleman, of no fixed abode, was taken into custody and the firearm was sent off for forensic examination.
