Liverpool's traditional Pancake Day race, which pits the city's chefs against each other to celebrate Shrove Tuesday, has been won this year by LunyaLita.

Held in the grounds of Liverpool Parish Church, the annual race sees the chefs do laps around the gardens while also flipping a pancake in a pan.

Four chefs from Hotel Indigo, Ma Boyle's, Artists Club and LunyaLita took part this year, with the latter being presented with the much-coveted engraved pancake pan for victory by the Rector of Liverpool, the Revd Canon Dr Crispin Pailing.

‘It’s the finest achievement of my career so far’

Winning chef Alex Hopkins, from LunyaLita, battered the competition to be crowned champion.

He said: "I'm a bit knackered but elated. I had to run here. I asked my sous chef to make the pancake batter yesterday, and he forgot to do it.

“I had a hard time getting into the building at work because I haven't got my keys with me. So, I had to make a pancake batter as quick as possible then run, so I was here on time. It's the finest achievement of my career so far, I'd say."

History of the event

Initially held in the 1980s, the Pancake Day race was revived in Liverpool in the mid 2000s.

The origin of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday lies in the tradition of using up remaining fat and dairy products before 'fasting' began in Lent.

Although people rarely give up dairy products in Lent today, many Christians still keep the tradition of giving something up to prepare themselves for Easter.
