Pressure is mounting on Boris Johnson to delay a planned national insurance hike, amid a cost of living crisis.

The prime minister set out plans in September 2021 to raise funds for health and social care issues brought on by the Covid pandemic.

Yet soaring household bills, spiralling inflation and higher interest rates on the horizon have led to many ministers calling for a rethink.

The cost of everyday bills and essentials have gone up, with inflation hitting its highest rate in nearly a decade.

A rise in energy bills, the cost of transport, hospitality and household goods are already adding up.

‘Essentially, it is going up and really quickly’

John says: "Essentially, it is going up and really quickly; fuel, all your foodstuff, everything. It is going up as things are getting smaller you're spending more money on smaller products."

‘The cost increase on gas and electric’

Barbara says: "Well, I've had to have the heating on more because I've had Covid, so I've had to stay at home. It's gone colder, so the cost increase on gas and electric."

‘It's gone sky high’

Babs says: "It's gone sky high every shop you go into it's gone up and up and up, especially the electric and gas for the winter but what can you do? You've just got to go with the flow, haven't you?"
