Widnes ‘tornado’ - Shocking scenes as suspected tornado tears through housing estate causing £1000s in damage

There was visible shock on the faces of people living in a residential street in Widnes after a suspected tornado ripped through the neighbourhood leaving a trail of devastation in its path.

Police in Widnes confirmed they started receiving reports of damage to property and vehicles in the area at around 12:25pm on Wednesday.

Approximately 20 properties sustained damage as a result.

One resident, Claire Earnshaw, shared footage from the scene immediately after it had subsided and she described what she saw as “total devastation”.

“There have been reports of a #tornado in the Widnes area this lunchtime,” said the Met Office.

“They’re not uncommon in the UK,” they added.

The local MP for the area, Derek Twigg praised the way in which the local people rallied and helped one another after the incident.

He added: “It was good to see people pulling together to clean up the damage and I hope the damage is rectified soon.”

There are no reports of any injuries at this time.
