Wirral and other parts of Merseyside woke up to wintry conditions this morning, as temperatures dropped overnight.

Snow showers began yesterday afternoon, and are expected to continue with a yellow weather warning for snow and place today (Tuesday January 17) and tomorrow.

Despite gritters treating local roads last night, residents in parts of Wirral, including Irby and Wallasey, have reported icy roads and delays.

Longer range forecasts from the Met Office suggest that wintry weather is likely to remain with us for the rest of the week and Wirral Council advise that motorist take care.

Wirral Council have been advised by Biffa that whilst all collection vehicles are out, there may be delays to bin collections this week due to the weather.

A spokesperson for the council said: “This is because trucks can be up to 25 tonnes in weight when full, and if this slides on black ice, the risk of damage to people and property is high.

“If your bins are not emptied on their usual day, Biffa will aim to return the following day. If they aren’t emptied the following day, please report this via the council website so that a catch up collection can be arranged.”
