Everton face Manchester United in the Premier League but Nathan Patterson will be available.

Everton defender Nathan Patterson’s frustrating season hit another setback after he was sent off for the under-21s.

The right-back spent the best part of six months on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury in a 6-0 loss at Chelsea last April. Given the severity of his issue, which required surgery, the Toffees were patient with Patterson’s comeback.

But since returning to full fitness, having played three times for the under-21s, he’s yet to feature for a single minute for Sean Dyche’s side and has been an unused substitute for five games.

As a result, Patterson dropped back down to represent the young Blues against Watford in the Premier League Cup yesterday evening. Armando Broja, who joined Everton on loan from Chelsea in the summer, was handed his bow after an Achilles injury while Jake O’Brien also featured having had minimal game-time since joining from Lyon.

Paul Tait’s side suffered a 1-0 loss at Kings Langley and it proved a frustrating evening for Patterson, who was given a red card for two bookings. His second caution arrived after kicking the ball away after conceding a corner just after the hour mark.

Patterson must now serve a one-match ban - but will be available for Everton’s Premier League trip to Manchester United on Sunday. That is because suspension rules are competition-specific, so the 23-year-old will not be able to play for the under-21s against Ipswich on Friday 6 December.

Last season, Youssef Chermiti was given his marching orders for similar after firing a double for the under-21s in a 3-1 win over Fulham in the Premier League International Cup. However, he was available for Everton’s Premier League fixture against West Ham.

Broja, meanwhile, featured for the entire first half as he works his way towards full fitness and O’Brien played the entire match.
