Everton sacked Rafa Benitez two weeks ago amid a run of just one Premier League victory in 13 matches.

The search for his successor has taken longer than many fans would have hoped but there’s general positivity around Lampard’s appointment.

What’s been said

The former England international has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea a year ago.

Before that, he guided Derby County to the Championship play-off final in the 2018-19 season - which was his maiden managerial role.

Cottee, who scored 99 goals for the Blues between 1988-94, played alongside Lampard at West Ham.

He’s confident his former team-mate will succeed on Merseyside.

Cottee wrote on Twitter: “Congrats to my old team mate, Frank Lampard, for getting the @Everton job.

“He was the right choice and if given time, he will restore the good times and put a smile on the Evertonians faces again.”

The Dutchman, 24, is set to sign on loan from Manchester United for the rest of the season and is currently undergoing a medical.

Although van de Beek has struggled at Old Trafford since his arrival from Ajax in August 2020, Cottee reckons it’s a good bit of business from Everton.

He added: “A good start getting van de Beek in and hopefully another addition today.”
