Everton title-winning hero has say on who should succeed Rafa Benitez as manager - and Rangers legend agrees

Everton title-winning midfielder Trevor Steven has thrown his weight behind Duncan Ferguson taking over in the Goodison Park hot seat.

The Toffees are searching for a sixth manager since 2016 after sacking Rafa Benitez yesterday.

The Spaniard won just one of his previous 13 Premier League matches, with the axe wielded after a 2-1 loss to relegation-threatened Norwich City on Saturday.

There have been a number of names already linked to the vacant role.

They include former Blues striker Wayne Rooney, ex-Toffees boss Roberto Martinez and Frank Lampard.

Goodison hero Duncan Ferguson, who bagged 72 goals during two spells at the club, is also in the mix to hold the reins on an interim basis.

The fans' favourite has been part of the first-team coaching staff since 2014 and served as caretaker boss in December 2019.

Steven, who won two First Division titles, the European Cup Winners' Cup and FA Cup between 1983-89 at Everton, believes Ferguson is the correct man for the job.

He told Sky Sports News: “No-one comes to mind who is going to be able to deal with the initial crisis better than Duncan Ferguson.

“We have yet to see how far he can take that.

“There is enough of the season to go to see if he has got the skills.

“I personally think that he does and don't think that he has been given the platform yet to do so.”

‘It’s a no-brainer’

Ally McCoist played alongside Ferguson for Rangers and Scotland.

He too thinks that the former centre-forward deserves a chance.

He said: “I think they look for big Dunc, yes. That's exactly where they look.

“That man has done it before, there is absolutely nobody who knows the club better.

“I think he has a relationship with supporters that every manager in the country would die for to tell you the truth.

“That will cut him a bit of slack but once he gets in there it'll be just the same as any other manager, it's results how you're judged.

“I just think it's a no-brainer.”
