Cahill scored 68 goals in 278 appearances between 2004-2012 and is arguably the club’s greatest player this century.
Following the news, we take a look at some of the players who have followed in their dad’s tracks and how they fared in their own career.
Sir Alex and Darren Ferguson
Sir Alex had a modest playing career but is arguably the greatest manager to ever grace the game, having won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and five FA Cups with Manchester United.

He won five top-flight titles and three European Cups before claiming another two leagues as manager in the 1980s.

Cesare Maldini, Paolo Maldini and Daniel Maldini
What a footballing dynasty. The late Cesare is a legend at AC Milan, winning four Serie A titles and a European Cup between 1954-1966.
But Paolo surpassed his father's feats. He claimed seven Serie A titles and a staggering five European Cups between 1984-2009.
Daniel is only 19 but has already broken into the first team at Milan. He came off the bench in their 3-2 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday.

He represented Ajax and Barcelona, winning three Ballon d'Or crowns along the way as well as claiming four successive La Liga titles and a European Cup as Barca boss.
Jordi didn't have a disastrous career and played for Barcelona and Man Utd but never threatened to hit his dad's heights.
Zinedine, Luca and Enzo Zidane
Has there ever been a better centre-midfielder than Zizou? Quite possibly not.

His sons haven’t got near to their father’s lofty heights, though, despite both coming through the ranks at the Bernabeu.
Luca plays in goal for Rayo Vallecano while Enzo, who is the elder brother, represents Ligue 2 club Rodez.
Peter and Kasper Schmeichel
It’s crazy how much alike the two are in their playing styles.

Brian and Nigel Clough
The late Brian spent his playing career at Middlesbrough and Sunderland and won two England caps. It was as a manager where he made his mark, guiding Derby County from the Second Division to the First Division title and winning the European Cup twice at Nottingham Forest.

Jamie was a highly talented midfielder who scored 41 goals in 308 outings for Liverpool and won 17 England caps. Injuries meant he never quite fulfilled his potential, though and retired aged 31.
He finished his career playing under his dad at Southampton in 2005 but they could not avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Ian Wright, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Bradley Wright Phillips
Wrighty is an Arsenal legend. He netted 185 goals in 285 games for the Gunners, making him the club's second-highest scorer of all time. The now-Match of the Day pundit also plyed his trade with Crystal Palace, West Ham, Celtic and Burnley.

Hide AdThere was a period when Shaun was one of the best wingers in the Premier League and helped Chelsea win the Premier League title in 2006 and the FA Cup a year later. But his career then went on a rapid decline and he retired in 2017 at American second-tier side Phoenix Rising
Like his dad, Bradley was also a striker. He struggled in the Premier League for Man City and Southampton but was magnificent in the lower leagues for Plymouth and Charlton Athletic and was even better at MLS side New York Red Bulls. He still plays for Columbus Crewe.
Patrick and Justin Kluivert
Patrick was a prolific goalscorer during his playing days for the likes of Barcelona, Ajax and the Dutch national team.
Justin is still in the early stages of his career, with the 22-year-old currently on loan at Nice from AS Roma. He has potential.

Rory and Liam Delap
You can’t help but think of Rory on the launch pad wiping a ball with a towel on a cold, rainy Tuesday night at Stoke ready for one of his trademark long throw-ins when reflecting on his career. The agricultural midfielder was synonymous with Tony Pulis’ Potteries team of the 2010s.
However, Liam is quite the opposite. The 18-year-old is at Man City and is one of the most exciting young talents in the country.
