‘Sums up’ - Jamie Carragher makes Everton crowd admission and Roberto Martinez point

Jamie Carragher believes that Everton's second goal against Crystal Palace summed up the way Frank Lampard wants his side to play.

The Toffees delivered an impressive 3-0 victory against the Eagles at Goodison Park last weekend.

And Anthony Gordon's second-half effort left plenty of people purring given that 10 players were involved in the move.

The ball was worked from a short goal kick before Gordon finished off into an empty net after Vitalii Mykolenko's shot was saved.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher believes that Everton fans were somewhat nervous when previous manager Roberto Martinez encouraged his team to play from defence.

But the way the crowd reacted during the sweeping move underlined they are starting to trust Lampard's philosophy.

The former Liverpool defender said: “It was Everton's second goal, which was a brilliant goal. The theme of the show has been managers adapting. You think he [Lampard] started off at Derby then went to Chelsea and initially when he came into Everton, he wanted to play from the back.

“It's always been a bit of a sore point maybe at Everton and getting the crowd to buy into that. We highlighted on this show how they changed last season, they were more direct to stay up. But the second goal sums up exactly how he wants his team to play.

“I was actually in the crowd for Roberto Martinez's first game. They drew the game, I'm not sure who it was against but they had gone from David Moyes to Roberto Martinez. There was a thing about playing from the back and there was a frustration from the crowd early on about the goalkeeping throwing it out, playing behind the back. It's always been there.

“I always speak on the show about Everton type of football and I think Frank's bought into that. It can be a bit physical, get crosses in, [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin is back but that was a great football goal and it was really interesting listening to that crowd reaction.”
