Mina suffered a quad injury in Tuesday night's 3-1 loss to Newcastle United.
Frank Lampard has now confirmed that the Colombia international will be sidelined for a minimum of eight weeks - but it could be as many as 10.
The Blues boss said: “Yerry Mina is an unfortunate injury which will probably be between 8-10 weeks. It’s a strong injury around his quad.
“In the week I’ve been here, I’ve realised he’s a big leader in the group and a top player for us - a big miss.

“Our worst fears were confirmed a day or so later.”
How many games will Yerry Mina miss?
Everton will be desperate to get Mina back as soon as possible amid a battle to preserve their Premier League status.
When fit this season, he's been the Toffees' best centre-back.
However, he has struggled to remain healthy, having had hamstring and calf problems before his latest setback.

Should Everton get Mina back as quickly as eight weeks, he might be available for the visit of Manchester United on 9 April.
That would see him miss a total of eight games.
However, if Mina is out for the longer period of 10 weeks, he will be on the treatment table for as many matches.
He could well return for the Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Anfield on 23 April.

Everton could have to do without Mina for more than that projected figure, however.
The Blues are certainly expected to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals, having been drawn against non-league Boreham Wood in the fifth round.
Last-eight ties are due to take place the weekend of Saturday 19 March.
Meanwhile, the Toffees have three games that need to be rearranged.

Dates for those matches have yet to be confirmed. They could well fall while Mina is still recovering.
