Where would Everton sit in the Premier League table based just on home or away form?

The Toffees have been terrible away from home this season and their place in the Premier League is under threat as a result.

Everton’s away form has been woeful.

It was woeful under Rafa Benitez and it has been woeful under Frank Lampard.

They have won once on their travels all season - a 2-0 win at Brighton in August - and never even looked like winning since.

That win on the south coast was the only away game in which they have kept a clean sheet and one of only two in which they have scored more than once - the other being a 2-2 draw at Leeds United.

Everton’s last two fixtures epitomise the gulf between home and away form perfectly, fielding exactly the same starting 11 for a dominant 3-0 home win against Leeds as for a lacklustre 2-0 defeat at Southampton.

When asked about his side’s away form, Lampard spoke of mentality and confidence, of lacking belief and reverting to type - candid but worrying words to hear as an Everton fan.

Everton’s away form is the worst in the Premier League - they are bottom of the table.

Twelve games have garnered one win, three draws and just six points - a point less than Newcastle and two fewer than Norwich and Burnley.

Their points per game average of 0.5 is worse than two of last season’s bottom three - West Brom and Fulham - and is low enough to warrant relegation in all of the last five seasons.

The ‘reverting to type’ comment from Lampard seems particularly pertinent: Everton went into Saturday’s trip to St Mary’s off the back of their best performance of the season and started brightly on the south coast.

But then they were denied a penalty when the ball hit the arm of Oriol Romeu, then Allan picked up a needless booking and Everton crumbled.

There is a deep-rooted mentality issue and a worrying lack of resilience when things don’t go as planned.

And without the backing of the Goodison faithful to pick them up and push them on, the players fall apart.

Everton have three trips to London in the near future, with games at Tottenham, Watford and West Ham lined up, and Lampard will have his work cut out if he is to pick up significant points.

Goodison can be a fortress

The Toffees home form is what is currently keeping them above the mire.

They’ve won five at Goodison Park from 11, drawing once and taking 16 points - a return that puts them 12th in the home league table, sandwiched between Wolves and Aston Villa.

Everton’s points per game average of 1.45 is almost a point a game more than their away form and is currently the only thing keeping them safe.

Now that form was helped greatly by three wins in a row at the start of the campaign, but the performance at home to Leeds showed signs of what Goodison can become for the remainder of the season.

Lampard’s side took control of the game early on and - spurred on by a raucous Goodison - dominated a struggling Leeds side and won comfortably.

If they can continue to harness the energy of the fans then they should pick up enough wins to lift them to safety, but with games against Manchester City, Wolves and Manchester United on the horizon, both players and fans will need to be at their best to take anything.
