Liverpool could well be in line to make a centre-back addition in 2025, says Fabrizio Romano.
While the reports are that Virgil van Dijk has now opened contract talks with the club, worries about his future have eased slightly; with his deal set to expire at the end of the season there was a worry over losing him for nothing.

Hide AdIn that position, they are relying on four centre-backs with Jarell Quansah already penning a new deal and Ibrahima Konate not far behind. There’s also Joe Gomez who is the longest-reigning player in the squad. Still, the club has been linked with a move for a defender across the past two years and the exit of Joel Matip at the end of last season only added fuel to the fire.
One player who has cropped up consistently is RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba. Romano took to X to confirm the latest transfer news surrounding him that a new deal has been agreed but an exit next summer is still likely. ‘The agreement between Castello Lukeba and RB Leipzig is already sealed. Done deal. New contract will expire in 2029 and salary rise has been included. His exit in summer 2025 remains a possibility.’ This is certainly big news for any interested parties. Fabrice Hawkins (via SI.com) has reported that Liverpool are among the chasing pack and reports in 2023 from the Daily Express backed this up.

The 21-year-old played 68 games for Lyon before earning a move to Leipzig and he clearly boasts a great deal of experience despite his age. With 20 caps for the France U21 side, his senior French debut is also on the horizon and comments from their sporting director Richard Hughes in the summer teased that they might have had their eye on him during the Olympics.
Now they face each other in the Champions League and the defender has a chance he can compete at this level against a potent attack on the big stage. Not much fazes the Frenchman and tonight could be an audition for a future role at the club with next summer being the earliest opportunity to do a deal.
