The general consensus is that Liverpool are a little light at centre-back and that it could be a position that is altered next.
Arne Slot boasts a terrific six-man frontline and their midfield is stacked as well. Yet, they have just four senior centre-backs, where most have five and we all know the current status of Virgil van Dijk’s contract situation - and the fact that he is at an impasse with the club isn’t exactly promising news.

In addition, Ibrahima Konate is also close to a new deal as the club look to tie down key players.
There’s also Joe Gomez who was close to making a switch to Newcastle United in the summer and who hasn’t featured much at all this season. That’s why the latest news from Fabrizio Romano, speaking in his latest Daily Briefing, highlighting the absence of concrete links to any new centre-backs is important to hear for Liverpool fans. “Despite rumours linking centre-backs to Liverpool, I can say that I have nothing to tell you guys about this,” Romano remarked. He added, “I’d not be surprised if Liverpool decided to sign a new central defender during the 2025 summer transfer window, but as of right now, there is nothing concrete regarding names.”

We’ve seen a number of centre-back targets linked with Liverpool. To name a few: Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, Sporting’s Goncalo Inacio, Juventus’ Bremer, Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande, Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie and Jonathan Tah have all been names reported.
Of course, there are plenty of viable options out there who would jump at the chance to sign for a club like Liverpool. Yet, there are some creases to iron out when it comes to Van Dijk’s future, finding the most suitable target and whether there is an opportunity to become a starting centre-back. While it looks like defensive midfield may be more of an important position for a future signing, centre-back follows closely behind and it will certainly develop as the season ploughs on.
