Xherdan Shaqiri is confident that Liverpool will bounce back to their old selves this season.

The Reds sit just ninth in the Premier League table after picking up 16 points from their opening 12 games. Jurgen Klopp’s side already appear out of the title race while they face a battle to finish in the top four ahead of a trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (16.30 BST).

Shaqiri spent three seasons at Anfield between 2018-2021, winning the Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup before leaving for Lyon.

And the attacking midfielder, who now plays for MLS side Chicago Fire, believes his old club will eventually hit their peak again.

Via sportsbank.net, Shaqiri said: “Yeah, it was difficult start for them, but I’m sure they’re going to come back.

“They have the quality, but this is football sometimes; you cannot be always on the top, and the last few years Liverpool were always on the top and everything went well, but of course now maybe the other teams know a bit how to play against Liverpool.

“For me this is pretty normal in this kind of situation because it cannot always be top-top, you know. Yeah, this is normal in football. You cannot always be in the best shape, and probably Liverpool has not had the best start. But there are still many games to play, and I’m sure they’re going to come back.”
