Harvey Elliott suffered a sickening injury in Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat of Leeds United.

The Reds youngster was stretchered off following a tackle from Pascal Struijk, who was sent off as a result.

Sky Sports opted not to show replays of the incident given the nature of Elliott’s injury, although it appeared it was his ankle which was causing him profuse grief.

With Liverpool leading 2-0 at the time, Elliott - starting his third successive game - was on the wrong side of a robust challenge from Struijk in the 58th minute.

It led to Mohamed Salah immediately calling for medical attention to come onto the pitch, with referee Craig Pawson stopping play.

A minute later, Pawson issued the Leeds defender a straight red card.

Elliott was then stretchered off and greeted by applause from the home supporters at Elland Road - which he responded to with claps of his own.

The irony was Jordan Henderson, who came on to replace Elliott, was already set to come on for the 18-year-old.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will give an update on Elliott’s fitness after the game, although he’s likely to be sidelined for a substantial period.

Elliott has taken to Instagram to update supporters on his condition.

He wrote: “Thank you for all the messages guys! Road to recovery. YNWA.
