How Leicester City's PSR successful appeal could impact Man City case as Liverpool watch on
Leicester City’s successful appeal against an alleged breach of Premier League profit and sustainability rules may ‘encourage’ Manchester City in their own upcoming battle battle.
Leicester managed to avoid punishment for supposedly breaking financial rules for the three years to the end of the 2022-23 season. The Foxes were relegated that campaign but had their shares in the top flight transferred to Luton Town before the end of their accounting period on 30 June 2023. They were therefore classed as an EFL Championship club at the time of their charge.

Man City are set to be the next team to battle the Premier League over 115 alleged breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018. During that period, the Etihad Stadium side established themselves as one of Europe’s top clubs as they won three league titles. In the 2013-14 campaign, City finished just two points above Liverpool to claim the silverware.
Reds fans are watching on to see if modern-day City will be given a retrospective punishment or if they indeed have any previous trophies stripped. The case is set to begin this month but an outcome may not be known until early 2024.
City have insisted they are wholeheartedly innocent and are backed by ‘ irrefutable evidence’. BBC Sport reports that City cannot rely on a technicality that Leicester seemingly used to their advantage. Their PSR case is also different as it is not an overspend in the case of the Foxes, Everton and Forest. Yet it is suggested that the Premier League’s defeat means that City’s legal team - likely to be the best in Europe - will ‘ will certainly scrutinise the wording of the rules to see if they are being correctly applied’
