Liverpool are already happily ensconced in the next round of the Champions League.

Despite being drawn in the so-called “Group of Death”, the Reds’ berth in the last 16 is secured with two matches to spare.

Jurgen Klopp's men have impressively already secured top spot in Group B, having yet to drop a point with two wins over Atletico Madrid and defeats of AC Milan and Porto.

It's the latter who visit Anfield on Wednesday night (20.00 GMT).

Unlike Liverpool, the Portuguese outfit still have plenty to play for as they battle for second spot in their bid to move into the next round of Europe's elite club competition.

Potential rotation

After a 5-1 loss at Estádio do Dragão, Porto will also be out for revenge on Merseyside.

There's no doubt that Sergio Conceicao will play his strongest side against the Reds.

On the other hand, Klopp has the luxury of resting several players should he wish to do so. After all, it's a dead rubber for Liverpool.

The likes of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane could be given a breather.

Meanwhile, much-needed minutes might be handed to Takumi Minamino, Joe Gomez and Neco Williams among others.

Lucrative prize money

However, Klopp has a big reason not to make wholesale changes and go for the jugular.

The Champions League is the most lucrative competition in football - and a win in the group stages is worth an eye-watering amount.

For the 2021-22 season, each group-stage victory nets clubs a staggering £2.4 million.

That means there's still just shy of £5 million up for grabs for the Reds, having already accrued £9.6 million.

Speaking after the 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid last month, which earned Liverpool top spot in Group B, Klopp was well aware of the cash still available.

He told BT Sport: “You earn a lot of money to win Champions League games. Not me personally, it's just for the club it's important. That's what we will do.

“The first thing was getting through the group. Getting through the group with 12 points after four matches is absolutely insane, to be honest, but we did it and now there are two games to do.

“One is against Porto, it's a home game, we are Liverpool and it's a home game, we have to play well.”

Klopp’s quandary

Given the financial impact the Covid-19 pandemic had on football, earning revenue is more important than ever.

It's crucial the Reds boost the Anfield coffers again - and it's why Klopp will be mulling over a strong side against Porto.

But, in contrast, these sort of scenarios are a rarity. Liverpool have an unexpected situation in which they can give key players an evening off.

That could prove crucial ahead of the busy festive period.

It’s something Klopp and the Anfield will have likely discussed. It’s a quandary all right.
