Liverpool are hoping to finally find a solution to Loris Karius' future this month.

The much-maligned goalkeeper hasn't played for the Reds since his infamous performance in the 2018 Champions League final.

Karius made two high-profile errors in the 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in Kiev.

The German has had disappointing loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin since.

Now he finds himself as fifth-choice goalkeeper at Anfield, with Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher, Adrian and 19-year-old Marcelo Pitaluga ahead in the pecking order.

Karius has six months left on his Anfield contract and Liverpool are keen for him to depart during the January transfer window.

Speaking to The Athletic, goalkeeping coach John Achterberg admits it doesn't help anyone if Karius fails to depart.

He said: “In the end, it’s down to him, his agent and the club to try to find a solution. Hopefully there will be one this month.

“It doesn’t help anyone to sit for another six months without the feeling that you are really fighting for something.

“That’s not going to improve him. He needs to use his quality to make a career now. Loris has a lot of good qualities.

“If not he will train with us until the end of his contract. If Loris goes then we will look to bring one up from the academy again.”

Will Loris Karius leave Liverpool?

In October, Karius admitted that he was keen to leave Liverpool in the January transfer window.

He has been linked with a switch to Greuther Furth - who are currently bottom of the Bundesliga and have the worst record of any club in Europe's top five divisions.

Karius almost completed a move to Swiss side Basel in the summer but it fell through.
