Liverpool to rival Steven Gerrard in race for Barcelona starlet

Liverpool face competition from Steven Gerrard in the January transfer window.

Liverpool have been continuously linked with a return for Philippe Coutinho since his departure in 2018 and this month is no different.

The midfielder has struggled with his form during his time with Barcelona, making only twelve La Liga appearances last season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side could be closer to re-signing Coutinho than he ever has been given their desperate need to bolster their attack this month.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have already jetted off to the Africa Cup of Nations and Goal are now reporting that Liverpool will look to snap up the Brazilian as their replacement.

After an exceptional spell on Merseyside, Coutinho joined Barcelona in 2018 in a deal worth £142 million.

Given the 29-year-old’s £380,000 per week contract, the Catalan giants will be keen to see Coutinho depart and a return to the Premier League seems likely.

The midfielder’s staggering salary would be the only stumbling block in Liverpool’s attempt to re-sign him, while Barcelona would have to accept they will endure a significant loss on the £142 million that they paid almost four years ago.

Who else is interested?

Aston Villa are one club reportedly keen on signing Coutinho, with boss Steven Gerrard hopeful of a reunion with his former teammate.

The Brazilian joined Liverpool in 2013 and played alongside Gerrard up until his move to LA Galaxy in 2015.

Goal has also claimed that Everton are eager to snap him up - with the Toffees long being linked with a move for their former rival.

Liverpool fans will be hoping Coutinho doesn’t opt for a move across Merseyside given their love for the Reds hero.
