But Liverpool's attacking potency and ruthlessness overwhelmed and overpowered the Red Devils.

When Liverpool made the decision to bring in Klopp in October 2015, sacking Brendan Rodgers despite him previously yielding a runners-up medal, it was to dine with the European superpowers.

A Champions League trophy and a Premier League title later, that's emphatically been achieved.

That's what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to accomplish at Old Trafford.

Calls for the Norweigan's head have understandably intensified after the ignominious defeat.

Into his third season as United manager, there are serious concerns he will never be able to bring the glory days back.

Despite spending a wheelbarrow load of cash and bragging a star-studded side on paper, there are doubts the Red Devils will even finish in the top four this season.

Compare that to Klopp at the same stage of his Liverpool career. In his third season, he guided the Reds to the Champions League final.

And even a fourth-place finish in the Premier League was unlucky that 2017-18 campaign, with only Manchester City losing fewer games. Twelve draw was their Achilles heel.

Swift progress

Since that season, Klopp's ensured there's been no stagnation and only progression.

Key players such as Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk have been retained and bought into the belief the Reds can dominate both domestically and in Europe.

Liverpool have eschewed signing players on reputation, previous achievements and commercial value. Instead, recruits have been limited yet carefully selected so that they'll fit into the system and philosophy.

Two of the most recent signings shone against United. Diogo Jota bundled home the second goal and Ibrahima Konate, making just his second Premier League outing, was dominant in defence throughout to repel Cristiano Ronaldo and Co.

Klopp celebrated the three points passionately at the final whistle, after becoming the first Anfield boss in history to go seven games unbeaten at Old Trafford.

It was also his 200th win at Liverpool boss, with none of his predecessors hitting the landmark quicker.

The German soaked up the moment as it was another victory that reaffirmed what a magnificent job he’s carried out at Liverpool.

Now Klopp needs to ensure that the momentum continues and they maintain a challenge on two fronts.
