Jurgen Klopp’s side had been expected to have a quiet window - but things have changed.

Liverpool moved to sign Luis Diaz from Porto earlier today in a deal worth up to £50 million. The Reds hijacked Tottenham’s pursuit of the Colombia international.

Now Klopp is looking to bring Carvalho to Anfield and bolster his attacking options.

Carvalho, 19, is enjoying a fine breakthrough season at Fulham. He’s scored seven goals and registered four assists in 19 appearances to help the Cottagers to the top of the Championship.

The teenager is out of contract at Craven Cottage in the summer and is yet to sign a new deal. Should be walk away, Fulham will only be entitled to a compensation fee.

What’s been said

Cottagers boss Marco Silva was asked about Carvalho’s future on Friday ahead - and was adamant the youngster would not be leaving amid a Premier League promotion push.

Silva told reporters: “Fabio will be with us until the end of the season, I would like to see him here for more years.

“From day one I have been trying to keep him. It is not a surprise that clubs are interested in Fabio. We are talking about a young player with big talent.

“The situation is not easy because he is in the last year of his contract, but that is the reality. It is out of our plans for him to leave the club in this window.

“It has been difficult for us to renew with him, but we are trying.

“It is always difficult with a player of this talent - even with a contract it is difficult to keep him, and without it is even worse. But Fabio will be with us until the end of this season.”

Will Liverpool sign Fabio Carvalho?

Liverpool appear that they’d rather move for Carvalho than wait for the summer.

Even though parking the deal for six months would likely work out cheaper, there added risk.

Carvalho would be a free agent and plenty of suitors would be circling. He is also able to sign pre-contract agreements with clubs across Europe, with Barcelona one team linked.

Fulham won’t want to lose Carvalho but, ultimately, every player has their price. From a financial point, it could make more sense for the Cottagers than having to settle for compensation.

Carvalho will also be buoyed by Liverpool’s track record of signing young talents from outside the Premier League and nurturing them to the next level.

In recent years, the Reds have signed Joe Gomez from Charlton, Harvey Elliott - Carvalho’s former Fulham youth team-mate - and, most recently, Kaide Gordon from Derby.
