Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has made his frustrations about Liverpool’s winning penalty against his side at the weekend perfectly clear - and fans of his old club have been quick to offer their own opinions on his comments on social media.

The Reds had to rely on a Mo Salah spot kick to wrap up all three points against the Villans, with the Egyptian winning the initial foul himself after being brought down by Tyrone Mings in the visitors’ area.

At the other end of the field, Villa were denied a penalty of their own in an incident involving Danny Ings and Liverpool stopper Alisson, and speaking after the match, Gerrard wasted no time in voicing his displeasure at the two decisions.

The Anfield icon said: “Penalty box to penalty box Liverpool were better than us.

“But ultimately the game has been decided by a penalty. There were two penalty incidents in the game, Liverpool got theirs – and if you look at it, Salah fouls Tyrone Mings first.”

He added: “I thought we had a decent shout for a penalty, there was certainly contact from Alisson on Danny Ings and if you follow it there is a two-hand shove on Ollie Watkins.

“We thought that deserved the referee and VAR taking another look but it looked like they wanted to move on quickly.

“Ultimately we have lost the game in the other box which we felt was a foul on Tyrone, it feels harsh.”

Club legend or not, however, several Liverpool fans were quick to criticise the 41-year-old for his comments.

@StephenGormley3 tweeted: “Stevie G has the masterstroke of any top manager - the ‘I hate losing’ syndrome. They all have it. Any excuse will do to ease that losing feeling. Liverpool just played better on the day and deserved that win.”

@belfast_red tweeted: “It’s nuts. It’s a penalty all day and it’s getting a full investigation.”

@Arqamali118 tweeted: “Move on Stevie, you weren’t such a cry baby losing against City. Why run such an agenda to please Villa fans?”

@FunDisney3 tweeted: “Really, Stevie? Really? Sounding a bit like Alex Ferguson with that one.”

@LiamGranby tweeted: “Come on Stevie, what’s your next joke, lad?”

Some fans were slightly more sympathetic to Gerrard, however, and in particular the demands of his new role.

@sgntp tweeted: “He’s just doing his duty as manager.”

@frankenhooker75 tweeted: “He’s doing his job, but he’s wrong.”

@DownRUpLYBXA tweeted: “Fair play to Agent Stevie for keeping the act going”.

All in all though, some supporters were left struggling to wrap their heads around the concept of Gerrard siding with the opposition.

@wtking05 tweeted: “This is definitely going to take some getting used to”.
