Jurgen Klopp has explained why he substituted Trent Alexander-Arnold for a second straight game.

The right-back was withdrawn in the second half of yesterday's 1-1 draw against Everton in the Merseyside derby.

And given the raft of injuries the Reds currently have, Klopp is carefully managing Alexander-Arnold's minutes.

The Reds boss said: “We have to (manage his game-time).

“Where can we change at the moment? Players coming in, coming back.

“Arthur is now here, very important for us but he didn't play football for a long, long time and yesterday played in a rondo with us.

“We thought until last night, he would not be available. He was in the squad but the plan was not to bring him.

“Milly (James Milner) can play in midfield and in both full-back positions and we just thought in the last game, it made sense to bring on fresh legs there.

“That's why we decided like this. Trent is playing all of the time, Robo (Andy Robertson) is playing all of the time and we have alternatives. That's why we have to use them to bring fresh energy.

“It's nothing to do with performance even though Trent can play better than today, definitely.

“But it's nothing to do with that. We have to get through this period. Yes, players are coming back but they have to be reintegrated. You can't just bring them in and play 90 minutes so we have to look where we can make the changes.”
