Merseyside’s Tommy Fleetwood set to play key role in 2021 Ryder Cup

The tournament gets underway at  Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin on Friday.

Southport-born Tommy Fleetwood will be hoping to be part of a European Ryder Cup team that makes it back to back wins over their American counterparts this weekend.

Fleetwood, 30, was a key figure in Team Europe’s victory at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, France in 2018.

This was also his first experience of Ryder Cup golf.

Striking up an important partnership both on and off the golf course with Italian Francesco Molinari, the pair won all four of the matches they played together during the tournament in Paris.

Fleetwood won’t have the opportunity to strike up the partnership with the Italian this year, which was dubbed by many as ‘Moliwood’ as Molinari is not part of this year’s team.

European captain Padraig Harrington hasn’t let slip who will pair Fleetwood with this time, but he’s ready to play with whoever.

“Whatever the captain wants me to do, what sort of matches he wants me to play, who he’d like me to play with, who we fit well with, it’s the same for all the guys,” Fleetwood said.

The action in this year’s Ryder Cup tees off on Friday at 13:05 UK time ahead of three action packed days of golf.
