What’s On: 10 things to do in Liverpool this weekend - October 8-10

The autumn weather is here and the nights are closing in but the storms have abated. So, wrap up, get out there and make the most of the weekend.

BlackFest Celebration Night

What is it? A special evening to celebrate the end of the festival, and to look to the future as we enter Black History Month. Featuring performances by the Wavertree Community Gospel Choir, singer Nicaise Koffi, performances from long-time activist, poet, and performer Curtis Watt, Digitz and many more, including local Liverpool female DJ collective Girl’s Don’t Sync.

Pick your own pumpkins

What is it? Spooky season is creeping up on us and what better way to get into the spirit than to pick your own pumpkin at Church View Farm in Lydiate. Entry is free and a wheelbarrow is provided to carry the pumpkins you pick, all that you need to do is wrap up, pull on those wellies and head on down to the pumpkin patch.

When is it? October 1 to 31, Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 17:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 17:00.

Big Fish Little Fish

What is it? World-famous, award-winning, Glastonbury Festival performing, family rave sensation Big Fish Little Fish are back at Hangar 34 for a family rave up with DJ Les Calvert. Tunes for family raving with confetti cannons, bubbles, giant balloons and a fab parachute dance finale.

The St George’s Hall Experience: The History Whisperer

What is it? The History Whisperer is the focal point of the new St George’s Hall Experience, using the latest technology to plunge audiences into a world where the past meets the present and history comes alive. It brings to life Liverpool in the 1850s and illustrates how the building represented two very different sides to the city – from opulence to destitution.

When is it? Friday, 8 October until Saturday, 6 November.

Calderstones Park, Liverpool

What is it? Voted as one of Britain’s 10 most glorious autumn gardens in The Guardian this week, Calderstones Park, in south Liverpool, offers a “feast of autumn colour”. Boasting a collection of native and exotic trees, plus a Japanese garden, it offers an array of reds, browns and yellows as we head towards winter. You can also visit the Reader cafe and the Calder Stones - six neolithic monoliths that are around 4,800 years old.

When is it? The main park is open 24-hours a day

Gino D’Acampo’s 360 Sky Bar

What is it? Location on the 17th floor of INNSiDE, Liverpool’s newest hotel, the Sky Bar boasts incredible views across the city. Providing guests with drinks, Cicchetti light bites and stunning views of the River Mersey. Relax and unwind to the upbeat soundtrack of local DJs and then party into the night.

When is it? Friday and Saturday, noon to 02:00. Sunday to Thursday, noon to midnight.

Oktoberfest - PINS Social Club

What is it? Think full German décor giving you all the Oktoberfest vibes. Long benches – traditional beer hall style, special drinks and authentic Bavarian eats always served with Gemütlichkeit – that sense of comfort, belonging & friendliness. Fantastisch Fridays will kick off your weekend the right way with live music, drinks n’ good vibes. Groovig Saturdays are all about the groove and what’s better than an Oom-Pah band to get you up on your feet. Kühlen Sundays is the perfect way to finish your weekend with chill vibes, eats n’ drinks.

Emily Speed: Flatland

What is it? A new film installation at Tate Liverpool. Flatland uses set design, choreography and costume to depict close-knit community structures. It follows a community of women for the duration of one day, conceived of as 12 short scenes. The centrepiece of the film is a portable stage set, inspired by Speed’s local village pantomime and manually operated Japanese kabuki theatre sets.

When is it? 25 September, 2021, until  5 June, 2022.

Uncertain Data

What is it? Uncertain Data is FACT’s new exhibition. The interactive exhibit presents the work of four artists in residence - Andrius Arutiunian, Angela YT Chan, Tessa Norton and Yambe Tam - who use art and technology to reveal how data controls our everyday lives and questions the trust we place in it. Their works includes a deep-sea video game powered by brain activity and lie-detecting artificial intelligence.

When is it? Wednesday, 15 September, to Sunday, 3 October.

AI: More than Human - World Museum

What is it? Elon Musk unveiled plans in August to produce a prototype humanoid artificial intelligence (AI) Tesla Bot next year. You can discover what the world of AI is all about at Liverpool World Museum’s special exhibition. It is full of interactivity, including a robot dog called Aibo and the video game 2065, as visitors are given a vision of the future. Free for children.

When is it? Until 31 October.
