Shoppers across the UK are set to see more stores disappear as a major discount retailer presses ahead with a major restructuring programme.

Poundland has confirmed that 14 more outlets will close by early February 2026, adding to the 19 stores already scheduled to shut in the coming weeks.

The closures are part of the retailer’s wider turnaround strategy under new ownership by Gordon Brothers, who acquired the business for just £1 in June.

The move helped the company avoid administration in August after a High Court-approved restructuring plan was secured.

Since launching its programme, Poundland has been focused on simplifying its operations and phasing out underperforming sites.

By early next year, more than 100 stores will have been closed, with clearance sales of up to 40% already underway in affected locations.

The retailer is also returning to a straightforward £1, £2, and £3 pricing structure across its UK stores, aimed at reinforcing its discount credentials and streamlining shopping for customers.

The overall store count is expected to fall from around 800 at the start of the programme, to between 650 and 700 once restructuring is complete.

Darren MacDonald, Poundland UK country manager, acknowledged the impact of the closures on local communities, saying: “We recognise how disappointing it is when we leave a store. The additional markdowns will help us leave locations we’re leaving with pride.”

He added that the company looked forward to welcoming customers in “the hundreds of Poundland stores we’ll continue to operate right across the UK.”
