Family statement as Liverpool FC icon Kevin Keegan diagnosed with cancer

Kevin Keegan won the European Cup at Anfield to cement his status as an all-time great.

Kevin Keegan’s family have released a statement after the Newcastle United legend was diagnosed with cancer.

The Newcastle icon - who played for and twice managed the Magpies - will undergo treatment immediately after being admitted to hospital for abdominal symptoms. Keegan has not worked in football since leaving Newcastle for the second time in September 2008.

Despite his legendary status for spearheading the “Entertainers Era”, Keegan has not returned to St James’ Park in an official capacity, although he did visit a private function at the stadium while Mike Ashley was still owner. A family statement has revealed the 74-year-old’s diagnosis, with privacy now being requested from the public.

“Kevin Keegan was recently admitted to hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms,” the announcement read. “These investigations have revealed a diagnosis of cancer, for which Kevin will undergo treatment.

“Kevin is grateful to the medical team for their intervention and ongoing care. During this difficult time, the family are requesting privacy, and will be making no further comment.”

Eddie Howe on Kevin Keegan charisma

Eddie Howe recently met Keegan at a book launch and opened up about his charisma and emotion towards Newcastle. He told reporters: “To speak to him and spend time with him was a brilliant thing. He’s got such a great personality. He told a lot of jokes and there was a lot of laughter.

“But you could also sense his emotion towards Newcastle and the emotion coming back from the people in the room. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think he did and I’d love to get him back here again in some way for the supporters to show their appreciation of him.”

“You have to be a dreamer. He said we’re in the Champions League so we have a chance to win it, and I agree. If you’re in a competition, you have to have that mindset that you try and win every game and see where it takes you. That’s very much my mindset. I don’t want to heap a load of pressure on the players, they’ve got enough to deal with this season, so it’s small steps.

“Kevin’s such a charismatic person. That’s probably why I took from him, that he was full of laughter. I’d love to spend more time with him and bring him back to the football club.”
