'Exceptional' Liverpool school wins major award at 'education Oscars'

An award-winning Liverpool school has earned yet another major accolade.

Abbot’s Lea School has been recognised as the Gold Winner of the SEND and Inclusive Practice category in the 2025 Pearson National Teaching Awards, dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the teaching profession.

The exclusive reveal was featured on BBC’s The One Show, ahead of a glamorous awards ceremony taking place this weekend.

Abbot’s Lea School welcomes every pupil through its zero-exclusion policy and pioneering ASD Model, which integrates academic learning, therapeutic support, and life skills.

Its in-house ADHD clinic aims to ensure students receive essential healthcare without missing lessons, while weekly open-house assemblies and coffee mornings keep families closely involved.

On The One Show, Kevin Duala joined Abbotts Lea student, Karim, to surprise head teacher Ania with the Gold Winner award, alongside a moving display of artwork that students prepared for the special moment.

Selected from thousands of nominees, Abbot’s Lea School has been recognised for their “exceptional contribution to both students and the wider community”. The Liverpool school was also crowned Most Inspirational Specialist School at this year’s Educate Awards.

The Pearson National Teaching Awards is an annual celebration that honours the incredible achievements and transformative impact of educators.

Run by the Teaching Awards Trust, an independent charity, and sponsored by Pearson, the world’s lifelong learning company, the awards shine a spotlight on the pivotal roles teachers, support staff, colleges, schools and early years educators play in inspiring young people, every single day.

A sparkling awards ceremony will take place in Central London on Saturday (November 29), hosted by TV presenter and broadcaster Gaby Rosli

Sharon Hague, CEO, Pearson UK, said: “Behind every confident student or changed life, there’s an educator who made it possible. The Pearson National Teaching Awards shines a spotlight on the inspiring individuals whose influence has gone far beyond the classroom.

“This is a celebration of excellence at the highest level, and we are thrilled to be able to recognise these achievements. Congratulations to all of this year’s Gold Winners!”
