While the summer holiday from school is in full swing, the new academic year isn’t far off.

It has been a much needed break for many pupils, parents and teachers after a school year interrupted by various Covid restrictions.

Families across the UK are enjoying time together at home or out and about as many activity centres and entertainment venues reopen.

Yet the summer holidays have a habit of flying by, leading to many parents starting to plan for the big return to the classroom for 2021/22.

If you have a child at a Liverpool City Council school, then here’s all you need to know about when the kids go back and key term dates for the new academic year.

When do kids go back to school?

Pupils across the UK are currently enjoying their summer holiday away from the classroom but it won’t be long before they return to school.

Schools will soon reopen to staff and pupils for the 2021/22 autumn term - but not all schools go back at the same time.

There are slight variations across the UK with schools in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland having different return dates.

Schools in England and Northern Ireland go back on Wednesday 1 September 2021, with pupils in Wales returning on Thursday 2 September 2021.

School pupils in Scotland are scheduled to return on Monday 16 August 2021.

There are often differences in dates between state and privately owned education centres so it is advised to always check with your child’s school.

What are the 2021 Liverpool school term dates?

The autumn term starts on Wednesday 1 September 2021.

School pupils will take a week long break from the classroom between Monday 25 and Friday 29 October 2021.

The term ends on Wednesday 22 December 2021.

When do Liverpool schools break up for Christmas?

The first day of the Christmas break is on Thursday 23 December 2021.

Pupils will have almost two weeks off over the festive period, with the Christmas break ending on Tuesday 4 January 2022.

The first day back for pupils at Liverpool schools in 2022 will be Wednesday 5 January.

Key 2022 dates for Liverpool schools

The 2022 spring term half term break runs from Monday 21 to Friday 25 February.

Schools will break up on Friday 8 April to Friday 22 April for Easter before returning to the classroom on Monday 25 April 2022.

The 2022 May Day bank holiday falls on Monday 2 May, with the summer term half term running from Monday 30 May to Friday 3 June.

When do Liverpool schools break up for summer 2022?

The 2022 summer term ends on Tuesday 19 July for Liverpool schools.

The 2022/23 academic year is scheduled to start on Thursday 1 September 2022 for Liverpool schools.

Do I still have to record Covid test results during the summer holidays?

School pupils have undergone regular lateral flow testing during the Covid pandemic to help limit the spread of the virus.

Advice from the Department of Education is to continue with regular lateral flow tests in the holidays and register results online.

Parents have been assured reporting will not lead to more school closures, rather "to help councils and local health officials understand the community rates of infection better, enabling them to identify any possible outbreaks early and to take appropriate action in order to help to break chains of transmission".
