The annual guide, released by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), offers an insight into pubs, bars and clubs. It highlights venues selected by its members “as places to savour good beers from small breweries as well as cask-conditioned lagers and world beers and some pubs are highlighted for serving real ciders too”.
Here are nine of the Liverpool pubs and bars that feature in the 50th edition of the guide and what CAMRA said about each of them in their Good Beer Guide 2023.
5. The Bridewell, Liverpool City Centre
CAMRA said: “An imposing, Grade ll-listed building that dates from the mid-19th century, when it was a police bridewell, or jail. The former cells are now seating areas and provide an
unusual focus in the downstairs bar.”
6. Baltic Fleet, Wapping
CAMRA said: “Grade II-listed building near the Albert Dock. It has a distinctive flatiron shape and the interior is decorated on a nautical theme. The existence of tunnels in the cellar has led to speculation that the pub’s history may involve smuggling."
7. The Willow Bank, Smithdown Road
CAMRA said: “Vibrant, traditional, multi-room pub with the original public bar dating back to when this was a Walkers house. Up to eight changing guest beers are on offer – real ale night is Tuesday – and there are occasional beer festivals. Good-value food is served including Sunday lunches.”
8. The Dispensary, Renshaw Street
CAMRA said: “This lively city pub is a haven for real ale drinkers of all ages. It was formerly a Cains tied house but is now leased out as a free house. The attractive bar area has Victorian features and there is a raised wood-panelled area to the rear."
