Imagine if you could band together with your neighbours and pool resources to do your research, checking out solar panels and installers and sense-checking all the ins and outs before going ahead.

Well, Solar Together does just that – and right now, it’s inviting people in the Liverpool City Region to register their interest-free and with no obligation.

Because Solar Together, a project backed by local councils, concentrates on specific areas of the country at different times, they can collect interest from households in the same place. That means installers know they’ll be guaranteed a number of jobs in the same area and that collective buying power kicks in to bring the costs down – ultimately saving you money on installation costs.

Business Manager Marie-Louise Abretti explained: "It’s an efficient way for installers to work. By buying materials such as panels and batteries at scale, the scheme creates savings that can be passed on to our customers. The combined purchasing power of hundreds of local households helps to get residents a competitive offer.”

It’s not the first time Solar Together has been in the Liverpool City Region; they have already helped 576 households and have installed 5,900 panels to date. Residents have invested £5 million on their solar panel and battery storage systems, which over a 25-year period should reduce CO2 emissions by 10,280 tonnes.

Easy process

Colin Dow, from Wirral, had his house fitted with nine panels and a battery storage unit. He said: "The whole process was quick and smooth, with advice and assistance to help us understand the process. I am particularly impressed and pleasantly fascinated to watch the chart showing my generation, use and storage of power, eliminating much of our reliance on costly power from the grid.”

By going through Solar Together, householders not only get a competitive deal, but they don’t have the hassle of assessing quotes and bids for the work – Solar Together represent individual customers as a group.

Am I eligible to apply?

If you live in the Liverpool City Region area, own your home or have permission from the landlord to put in a solar PV system, you can register their details free and without obligation. Small and medium-sized enterprises (non-domestic) and Commonhold Associations meeting this requirement can take part too.

Registration means giving some basic details about your home, the type of property, the size of the roof, the type of roof covering and that sort of thing. Solar Together then take all these details and invite national and local solar panel installation companies to bid for the work – it’s like a reverse auction.

Then they will select the companies which offer the best value, quality and reliability and fix a collective price. Once this is all done, which takes about six weeks, you will get a quote back for the work on your particular house or business, and if you want to proceed, work can begin.

The work is guaranteed for 10 years, and there are some optional extras, including fitting bird netting or fitting battery storage so that when it’s dark in the evening, you can draw stored electricity from your battery in order to become more self-sufficient.

You can even get an EV charge point that connects to the solar panels to power an electric car.

Marie-Louise said: “With rising energy prices, homeowners are looking for opportunities to save on their bills, increase their independence from the grid and reduce carbon emissions."
