But if you’re deciding where to live, safety is a key consideration. So, where are the safest places in the North West to live?
We’ve looked at the latest police figures for areas across the region to find the places with the lowest violent crime rates.
Unsurprisingly, it tends to be the big towns and cities that have the highest rates of violent crime.
In Blackpool, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show there were 70 violent offences recorded per 1,000 population during the year ending in September 2025.
In Manchester, there were 52 violent crimes per 1,000 people, followed by Oldham (47), Rochdale (45) and Liverpool (also 45).
But Stockport has a relatively low violent crime rate of 30, while in Trafford, just outside Manchester city centre, the violent crime rate is even lower, at 27.
Below are the 11 safest places to live in the North West, based on violent crime rates during the year ending in September 2025, the latest period for which figures are available.
While the list is dominated by more rural areas, some more urban locations do feature.
