Anne: ITV drama concludes and inspires renewed calls for Hillsborough Law

Anne depicts how Liverpool mum Anne Williams challenged medical evidence following her son's original inquest, refusing to accept the verdict of accidental death following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Anne, from Formby, was left heartbroken by the loss of 15-year-old Kevin, who was tragically killed at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Alongside other parents and their families, she was part of the fight for justice for the 96 who lost their lives at a football match.

Seeking new medical opinions, tracking down witnesses whose statements were altered, and leaving no stone unturned in her fight for truth and justice.

Anne refused to believe the official line on how the disaster unfolded, and the series shows her determination to unearth the truth about the tragedy.

The four-part mini-series is written by Kevin Sampson, who was at the 1989 semi-final as a fan and interviewed Anne Williams for his book Hillsborough Voices.

Sadly Anne passed away in 2013 though her legacy continues. The series was developed alongside her daughter, Sara, who was just 9 when her brother sadly died.

Fresh calls for a Hillsborough Law

Off the back of this drama being released, The Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, and Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, are making renewed calls for a Hillsborough Law.

Hillsborough Law will require public bodies to tell the truth and will ensure parity of funding for bereaved families after state-related deaths with the public bodies involved like the police, NHS Trusts and local authorities

The Mayors have been joined in their call-out by representatives of bereaved families from tragedies past and present, senior political figures, campaigners and others, including Maxine Peake, who plays the title role in the new ITV drama.
