COVID-19: the areas in Liverpool City Region with highest and lowest infection rates

COVID-19 cases are increasing across much of the UK, with more than 70% of the country recording a week-on-week rise.

In England, the rate of new coronavirus cases has soared to its highest level since summer, reaching a rate of 356.6 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending 8 October.

Rates have not been this high since 24 July, when the seven-day rate stood at 375.1.

COVID-19 cases in Liverpool

In Liverpool City Region, Wirral council area has seen a huge 49.3% increase in week-on-week COVID-19 cases from 1 October to 8 October.

Seven of the top ten worst hit neighbourhoods are on the peninsula.

Great Meols, Wirral, had the highest week-on-week increase in the Liverpool City Region. Cases have increased 233.3% to 486.9 per 100,000 people.

The Public Health England figures also show that three other council areas recorded an overall rise in COVID-19 cases: Halton (35%), St Helens (11.3%) and Liverpool (1.9%).

Two council areas recorded an overall drop in percentage rate week-on-week: Knowlsey (-12.4%) and Sefton (-10.6%).

UK Health Security Agency chief executive Dr Jenny Harries has said that this year’s flu could be a “multi-strain” and warned that natural immunity will be lower due to months of lockdown and social distancing last year.
