Four-fifths of the UK population is now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, with a booster programme also announced for the over-50s this week.

England’s deputy chief medical officer, Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, said the UK has had one of the world’s most successful COVID-19 vaccination programmes.

Vaccines have averted 24 million cases and saved an estimated 112,000 lives, he told a Downing Street press conference.

However, COVID-19 infection rates have surged across England since children returned to school classrooms.

Official figures from the UK Government show infection rates increased by 13% between August 31 and September 7.

As of September 12, 81% of people aged over 16 had received two doses of a vaccine, according to Public Health England (PHE).

There are areas of Liverpool where a far smaller proportion of the population have had both jabs and public health officials in the city have warned of a difficult winter ahead.

Councillor Frazer Lake, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health said: “None of us wants to see ongoing disruptions to our lives, or indeed go back to the lockdown that we faced last winter – and the best way to prevent that from happening is by us all taking simple precautions.

“The reality is that there are still too many people in Liverpool who haven’t yet been double jabbed to protect themselves and others, so if you haven’t I would ask you to do so as soon as possible.

“We know that the NHS always comes under real pressure as a result of respiratory illnesses each winter and it is vital we all take responsibility to protect it as much as possible.”

In the Central and Islington area, just 31.95% (5,872) of 18,379 people aged over 16, had been given a second COVID-19 vaccination dose, as of September 12, 2021.

The statistics make the area the fifth worst neighbourhood for fully vaccinated people across England and the top area of the Liverpool City Region.

In Edge Hill, 33.80% (5,839) of people out of 17,273 aged over 16, had been given a second dose - making it the 14th worst in England and second in Liverpool.

Poulton, Raby Mere and Thornton Hough, Wirral, topped the list in the Liverpool region with the highest number of people who had received two doses of the vaccine.
