The city of Liverpool has had some success in a nationwide poll asking adults to rate their hometown on kindness and community spirit.

Though Oxford took first place, Liverpool was not far behind and our city took a respectable sixth place on the list of kindest cities in the UK.

Given the Scouse spirit and the everyday kindness of residents of Liverpool and Merseyside it will not come as a surprise to many, some may even think the city should’ve been ranked higher.

The study asked 2,000 adults across the UK to rate their hometown on friendliness, good deeds and community spirit.

Some of the kind acts that people noted during regular encounters in their hometown were strangers opening doors, being said ‘good morning’ to in the street, and a neighbour taking a parcel in when they’re not home.

The study also found nearly half of adults wouldn’t want to live anywhere else than their hometown, with nearly a third choosing to live where they do because of its kindness.

Nearly three in ten often visit other cities and think they don’t seem as ‘kind and caring’ as their own.

It also emerged the average adult carries out two acts of kindness a day, with two-thirds feeling happy when they’ve done their bit.

For just over 40% of those polled, their main motivation for being kind is because it makes them feel good.

Almost half said they believe that it helps society at large and everyone should do it.

And nearly four in ten feel the need to help others more vulnerable than themselves.

The research is part of a partnership between cheese producers Babybel and Comic Relief to encourage everyday heroism and small acts of kindness.

A spokesperson for Babybel said: “It’s been really interesting to find out which city has officially been crowned the kindest.

“And also, how the nation rates their hometown for attributes such as helpfulness and being charitable. It’s lovely to know that these things are still abundant amongst communities across the UK.”
