Liverpool vigil for solidarity with Ukraine shows ‘we won’t stand for such violence and aggression’

The organisers of a Liverpool vigil for peace and solidarity with Ukraine says the city-centre rally sends out a clear message that “we won’t stand for such violence and aggression”.

The event took place at St Luke’s Bombed Out Church on Tuesday night and follows Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the continued assault on the country’s major cities.

The vigil was organised by the United We Stand - Solidarity Network (UWSSN), Polish Migrants Organise for Change (POMOC) and Liverpool Universities Polish Society.

Anna Drewniok, president of the University of Liverpool Polish Society, said: “We are standing with the people of Ukraine to show that we support them and won’t stand for such violence and aggression.”

Poland has already seen thousands of people pour over the border from Ukraine as they flee Russian troops advancing on the orders of president Vladimir Putin.

Adrianna Radlowska, organiser at University of Liverpool Polish Society, said: “We had loads of people come from all different countries.

“People who have been there, who saw the atrocities that all these tyrants can do to ordinary people - we had speakers from Hong Kong, Poland the Czech Republic.

“A war like this is not only a matter for Ukraine.”
