The 66 American Steakhouse in St Helen’s has been given a new zero-out-of-five food hygiene rating just months after it opened.

The steak and burger restaurant was launched by Kane McQuade in May and had received some positive reviews from diners.

However, an inspection of the premises on the town’s popular Bridge Street found that the standards in three key areas were in need of either ‘major’ or ‘urgent’ improvement.

The steakhouse was given a given the minimum score after assessment on October 1, the FSA’s website shows.

Standards found at the time of inspection

Hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage - major improvement necessary.

Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control) to enable good food hygiene - major improvement necessary.

Management of food safety: system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future - urgent improvement necessary.

About 66 American Steakhouse

The American-themed venue boasts red, black and white interior and has a menu that offers a variety of 32-week matured steaks.

Other favourites include burgers, racks of ribs, BBQ glazed chicken and starters like calamari and halloumi fires.

The zero means that of St Helens’ 209 restaurants, cafes and canteens with ratings, 128 (61%) have ratings of five and just one has a zero rating.
