Police made an open ground search following reports of shots being fired in the area on Tuesday evening.

Merseyside Police have recovered a significant weapons cache and a stash of drugs following an open ground search in Kirkby.

Two shotguns and a Samurai sword were among the items recovered around Chesterfield Drive and the area known locally as The Den.

The search was made following reports of shots being fired at a house in nearby Heathfield Drive on Tuesday evening.

A 19-year-old man from Kirkby was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of possession of a firearm in connection with the incident.

Today’s search in Kirkby discovered a sword and two hammers and a black bin liner containing a shotgun.

A second shotgun, also wrapped in black bags, shotgun cartridges and a quantity of drugs were found during a further search in the area.

The weapons have been forensically recovered and enquiries remain ongoing.

What’s been said

Detective Inspector John Fitzgerald said: “I am pleased that following significant open land searches in Kirkby that we were able to recover these weapons, which clearly could have been used to inflict injury or cause fear in our communities.

“Local community intelligence is key to us being able to make these recoveries and keep the people of Merseyside safe.

“I would ask anyone who has information about who is using weapons or where they are being stored to contact us so that we can take positive action.”
