I tried out EZVIZ’s first dual-lens video doorbell - I love the extra security it gives when I'm home or away

The new EZVIZ video doorbell - the firm’s first dual-lens offering, might be the answer to your paranoid prayers. We tried the new 2K camera (that means good quality, to those of us without a degree in techy things) at our home, as we live in the countryside, and can feel rather exposed at times.

The unit, along with an optional solar box to go alongside, was pretty simple to set up straight out of the box (again, please bear in mind throughout this that I am by no means a ‘gadget person’), and even I managed to scan a QR code to download the instructions straight to my phone, which helped immensely.

After getting it on charge, attentions turned to actually fitting it to the wall outside. With a 175-year-old stone cottage, I feared this could cause problems. However, the folks at EZVIZ seemed to have preempted installation attempts by people like me, and included drill templates, screws and wall plugs, so it really was as simple as it could be. It even told me how high I should put it to get the best view of whatever was going on at my front door.

The physical bit out of the way, it was back to my mobile, to install the accompanying EZVIZ app.

This is where the real fun starts. The easy-to-use app makes it simple to connect it to your wifi and then to check your camera - both views, as it is dual-lens - at any time of the day or night, wherever you are. Trust me, it becomes an obsession. Anyone who has approached my front door since - if I know them - must be growing tired of receiving picture messages moments later, showing them at my door, with an accompanying silly comment… But I can’t resist it.

It even notifies me if someone is moving around outside - with the excellent sensors often catching hapless dog walkers as they pass the gate. But it’s always nice to know the postie has been, especially when you can see the parcel they’ve left on the doorstep. However, should I wish them not to leave it there, at the touch of a button, I can tell them where to pop it - again, directly from the app!

The EP3x Pro, which we tested, also provides excellent quality video, so you really can see whatever is going on - day or night - making the shocked expressions of callers when you speak to them crystal clear! And it even stores a screengrab of the visitor each time the bell goes, in case you miss it while you’re out and about. It even has a tamper alarm, so if anyone tries to mess with it, they are going to get a scare!

Unlike similar products, one of the best things about EZVIZ’s door cam is there’s no need to pay a monthly subscription. It comes with its own 32 GB eMMC storage capacity which can store up to six months of video history if recording 10 min of activities every day.

We also have a handy signal booster, which when plugged in inside the house, helps keep your camera stay connected by boosting the wifi signal it receives. All this, and the little solar panel mounted above the doorbell keeps it nicely charged.

In summary, for people not in the bright lights of the big city (we don’t even have a light at the front of the house), and not used to diving into the world of high-tech gizmos, this is an excellent camera. It wasn’t hard to install, is easy to use, and provides amazing-quality images.

As well as being enormously fun, it really does provide some peace of mind when you’re out and about, or away from home for more prolonged periods, because it is a constant check everything is fine and dandy.

I would advise, however, you inform friends and family about your new door person, as it really can come as a surprise when they hear your voice out of nowhere as they approach the front door…
